Skiing Picture Above and In the McKay Glades - Boomerang Chair - Mt.
Washington, Vancouver Island.
It is my opinion that the McKay glades is one of the easiest ways down to the
bottom of the Boomerang chair. You can see in skiing pictures 4 and 5 that this
slope is very steep. It takes a lot of courage and confidence in your skiing or
snowboarding ability to make those downhill turns on terrain this steep through
a forest of trees.
Sometimes non-skiers and snowboarders wrongly assume that tree skiing is hard on
the body. Of course, this is only the case if you are unlucky enough or
unskilled enough to run into one - a tree that is.

Skiing Pictures above, in and below the McKay Glades, Mt. Washington.
Above the main picture (From Left to Right)
1. This picture is taken on the flats above the McKay Glades. The cut you can
see in the right center of the picture is Billabong and the run disappearing to
the right is Copper. Note to snowboarders - stay high to get across the flats!
2. Here are three snowboarders that have made it across the flats to the top of
the McKay glades. They have stopped to catch their breath and taken in the
beautiful skiing picture.
3. The top of the McKay Glades are quite gentle with the trees well spaced.
This provides some of the best glade skiing at the resort.
4. As you proceed down the hill the incline gets dramatically steeper. On new
snow days this can be a great place to play. Definitely double black diamond
terrain.
5. This is the skiing picture that you see when you come to the edge of the
McKay Glades. Here you can really see how steep the hill is with the chair far
below.
Safely First When Tree Skiing
Tree skiing is in a lot of ways like mogul skiing. You use the same muscle
groups; require quick side to side motion and quick short radius turns. The
obvious difference is the solid trees that stand in the way.
To maintain your safety you must ski or ride in control at all times. It is
important to maintain your balance and flexibility so you can adapt quickly to
any unanticipated obstacles.
Expect the unexpected and of course always wear your helmet while playing in the
glades. In glades that are on a steep pitch like these it is important to
perfect that little jump at the end of each turn.
The jumps will help you get the ski tips around in powder and control your rate
of descent. Be sure to take time out from skiing the McKay glades to enjoy the
great skiing picture you will find here. Enjoy.
